On the Bright Side ...

... received camera back from menders yesterday - and it was a joy to press the shutter to focus and then to take picture - OK only tried it out in the house but I'm happy - they've done the sensor clean and general service (got rid of an irritating "something" in the viewfinder - think it was a hair !!) - so at least tomorrow I've got camera + back-up camera - fingers crossed this ol' laptop stays the course.
