Clitheroe v Hyde United

Well I was probably taking a chance today, weather-wise. Left Levenshulme about 0930 this morning, stopping off @ the Wal-Mart in Bradford/Eastlands – don’t know why I was worrying, there were loads of H Potter books. We bought two (see previous thread), together with a load of other stuff (which probably covered their “loss leader” stance on the books !!). One last stop at ASM in Ashton for more varied stuff (Gulab Jamun, Tamarind Paste, a “big” Mango and other such tackle) before home for bacon and eggs and out on the 1157 train. Now the one day in the week I want to go to Manchester Victoria – I end up direct in Manchester Piccadilly from Mossley due to “works on the line” – I always forget that no-one travels at the weekend….still no panic on trains as I comfortably caught the 1300 to Clitheroe.

It was chucking it down all the way – and I suddenly realised I hadn’t checked whether the game was on/off – and I had no phone number on my moby either ! What the hell – one can easily spend an afternoon in Clitheroe – footy or not.

Arrived about 1415 – hotfooted it straight to the “New Inn” – Clitheroe’s real ale mecca. A pint of Phoenix “Arizona” was followed by a hotfoot to Shawbridge where the game was …….on ! Met Royf in the bar and dutifully paid off some long-standing debts (!!) before wandering out – it was still raining, so it was “tea towel over the lens” time (Carlf from Droylsden – how can I ever repay you for this idea !)

The game – it was tight, dare I say “feisty” – maybe not, but was was certainly “meaningful” with both teams going for it. It took a penalty just before half-time to separate the teams (it worked for Droylsden last Tuesday – maybe it’s a Conference thing)- duly despatched by Matthew Tipton (you guys signing him or what ??).

The second half began in a similarly tight way, but as the game went on it was a case of superior this, that and the other (although you could be blooming Chelsea, but a one goal lead is not safe !). Hyde did make it safe late on with a goal from the elegantly coiffured Dale Johnson, who’d come on as a sub in the second half.

Plenty of plusses for both teams – for Clitheroe, Sargie was excellent throughout, and I was rather impressed with the number 7 (Tosin Onibudu I believe ?). For Hyde – Earl Davis looked good at the back, and Tipton was “top on” throughout.

After the game there was no time to hang about – a trip to “Cowman’s” is compulsory on a day out in Clitheroe – they were just closing as I arrived – but the sausages were duly purchased. I had to forgo the pleasures of Byrne’s (more than an off-licence, a wine/beer mecca) – and the lad drinks tea now, so apologies to “Exchange Coffee” !!

Made the 1712 train back to Manchester, changing at Salford for the Piccadilly jump. A quick “2 for a tenner” at HMV Piccadilly (“Life on Mars” soundtrack album and “Urban Hymns” by the Verve which is surprisingly not in this household …). Got the 1912 express to Stalybridge giving me time for a quickie at the Buffet Bar (“Tiger Rut” from Millstone) before the slowcoach train arrived.

And home to find two people reading the two Harry Potter books – and both peeps very close to the end – they’ll be both done by midnight I’m sure.

And on – to this …. some pix of the day ....

And finally - this little lady covered some ground in the first 45 minutes - up and down the wing on the far side...took at least two of 'em to keep her in check !!

Harry Potter - New Film,,,

Putting that in the title might guarantee a few hits tomorrow - hee hee !!!

But that was tonight - the "family trip" to see the new HP film (that's family without our Michelle who's living it up in the campsite toilets of the North Vendee - and she wants me to post the new HP book to France as well !!). This naturally meant missing the Mossley Quiz Night - hope Dydo's "bell ringers" did the business ....

The film - well it's a huge book, page-wise so yes it's going to miss stuff out - and yes it was a bit "sporadic" (trying to work out analogies here - a scratched 12" record jumping - a jam-covered DVD when you miss out chapters etc etc)

But overall ...a good film - maybe the politics of the book were slightly glossed over (although Imelda Staunton as Umbridge came over really well !) - at least the overlong (in book) "punch up/wand up/big fight" at the end was mercifully condensed - although Sirius still "cops it" - (hope that's not ruined it for anyone !!).

Tis always a tricky one - I've read all the Potter books for my sins (work it out though - the early books were read as bedtime stories to my then little kiddies !) so I can moan about bits missed out (in this film - no Quidditch !!). However I loved the "Lord of the Rings" films whereas Mrs Smiffy (who read Tolkien at age 11 !!!) moaned about "bits missed out" !!

So - what goes around comes around.....tomorrow (OK tonight) - meal @ mates in Levenshulme with an overnight stay - Saturday - gotta be football, although choices up to now are Curzon Ashton (v Man City Reserves/Youth) or Ashton United (v Droylsden). Staveley v Stalybridge would have been nice, but it's been called off (the reason given is "flood damage" although I reckon Celtic are actually saving themselves for the big one next Tuesday at home to Mossley - we've got the Frank Robinson Trophy - we want to keep it)

Addition @ 0045 - Clitheroe might be a good option on Saturday - get to see Hyde United - and pay my debts to Royf and the guys from Clitheroe - this is slightly long-standing - and a touch embarrassing (!), so I'll look towards their "buy a brick" thing or whatever's on at the moment (putting it bluntly - I owe Clitheroe FC £20 !!) - I'll buy a few pints as well mind !!

Woodley v Droylsden

Have you seen the time !!!! (don't care what the blog time says - it's 0130 as I "save & close" !!)

4-0 to the Bloods - they're very good at penalties I must say ..... a good workout for all concerned really - Woodley started to get it together in the second half and tightened up considerably !! Good to see Carl and some of the Droylsden crew - and some of the Woodley guys as well - football is well and truly BACK !!

But I'm going to be really "ego-man" and say I thnk this is a cracker of a pic..... "Super Mario" ..
Tis a training session for photography too !!

Aaargh - I've finally got it .....

In the words of Marjory Dawes (FatFighters - Little Britain).....
"Dust - anybody - no - dust - anybody - no - dust" ....etc etc

Yes, no football this weekend - a camping weekend was kyboshed by the weather, but we got a walk in anyway. Here's a glider near Great Hucklow..spot the spots ...

So a trip to sensor-cleaning land looks likely before the beginning of August - eek !

Where else did we walk, i.e. "Where've y'bin ??" The answer being, "I've bin ..."
Ho Ho Ho - Tuesday looks like Woodley Sports v Droylsden to kick off my new season...

Football - it's coming .....

...so you'll soon be free of such mundane stuff as Download, Somerfield Lorries, Whit Friday, Huddersfield Canal and the overpopulation of Mossley !!

Bobbed up to Seel Park last night to "do a bit" - a brush, a can of masonry paint and a song in my heart ("Whiter Shade of Fence Panel" ??). However masonry paint is not altogether non-drip is it....

(I'm sure it'll wash out of the grass !)

The friendlies are kicking in too - tomorrow night Stalybridge are at Radcliffe Borough (I offer my apologies for absence - we're away this weekend, so prep to be done - which also means I'll miss the visit of Sven's boys to Bower Fold on Saturday - see attached pic of Stalybridge Buffet Bar door - I guess "Turnstile Bob" has sneaked in with the flyers !)...think I might make the game underneath mind ...

PS got called "an irritant" on Stalybridge board today by some geezer from Canada ("Long Time Gone") - apparently you're not allowed to post on Celtic Board if you don't support Celtic - why this guy isn't "giving it some" on the Toronto Blue Jays message board - I've no idea - you don't catch me on the Stafford Rangers Message Board under the name of "Long Time Gone" - well not much (three or four posts a year ??)

Damn - Aargh - Weekend - and stuff !!

S'pose it started on Friday evening (weekends normally do) - into Manc from work (my half-day went "tits" and I didn't leave until 1530) and off to Picc Box Office - I've had a £30 gift voucher for gig tix since last December (50th birthday) so thought it best to spend - I'm now the proud owner of a ticket (or receipt-type thing) for the "Black Crusade" gig at the MEN Arena on 21st November - featuring Trivium, Machine Head, Arch Enemy, Shadows Fall ......

...and DragonForce..now I've seen em outdoors twice (one good, one shite), indoors @ Manchester Academy last December (http://sixtamesides.blogspot.com/2006/12/dragonforce-rock.html) - excellent - fingers crossed for an arena -type gig - cus it seems that sound IS an issue for DragonForce ....it worries me as a fan.

I then went to Dukes92 in poncyland (aka Castlefields) to see an old workmate on his annual birthday bash - he does it every year - I bob in for a couple of hours after work before the rest (single ?? no kids ??) arrive for the rest of the evening...for the hell of it, here's a 270 degree type "stitch" from the early evening - not brill - but I'm still not up to scratch with Photshop - and it was with baby camera anyway !! PS Dukes92 were selling "Pride of Pendle" from Moorhouses on the pump for "only" £2-70 !!

Had to leave at 1845 - as my presence was required further up Deansgate to meet Mrs Smiffy and Penny and Paul from Rochdale at "The Restaurant" on John Dalton Street. Fine meal (calves liver me - and "proper" Budvar - best on offer) and a good natter. Home - more beer...sleep.

Saturday entailed hair cut and an afternoon pub wander - Mrs Smiffy and daughter doing "last minute" stuff - read on. Evening was dinner party cause our Michelle was on her last day on earth (well Ingerland actually - read on) - so we had friends round for more beer and food. In bed just before midnight because ....

...up at 0530 on Sunday morning to drive our Michelle over to Warrington to catch her bus to Holland - a three day training course for her before off to South Brittany for a few months work in the EuroCamp/Keycamp area. I'm expecting fluent French on her return - unless she sneaks off to the ski resorts in November - I know she's planning a few days in Morocco "on the way home" (!!) but hey - she's a big girl now - the degree course has finished and we await the results (she's about "that far" off a first - fingers crossed after moderation etc - we ARE expecting a return on our investment). In the interests of fair play our Duncan is off to Lancaster this year to start a teaching degree - so the "money out" remains the same - just going into a different bank account !!!

But I digress - the early start on Sunday (Mrs Smiffy came too) led to a lazy Sunday morning/afternoon (watched "Prisoner of Azkhaban") before a gentle early evening walk up and down the canal - for leg-stretching purposes.

Please excuse house construction - but that's the way of Mossley at the moment - the town is being blitzed/spoiled/soiled by new developments - which will only lead to hell - trust me I will one day soon put together a decent thread (warts and all) showing you all in bloggerworld what is happening to Mossley - and it does NOT make pretty reading/writing/looking at...

A swift drink at the "Roaches Lock" ("Old Speckled Hen" for me) - followed by a wander back. I stayed up long enough to watch "Cabin Fever" with Duncan on the box (messy gory stuff - believe same director that has done "Hostel" recently !) before - weekend ends...

Crazy Lunchtime @ Cheadle Hulme !

Some of you out there in "real world" may have gathered I do err toward the number 11 shirt (unlike New bloody Labour) - demos, free speech, anti-police brutality (especially against Fleetwood fans !), anti-Iraq war, anti-the anti-smoking ban - and stuff like that. I'm not a great believer in the internal combustion engine either. OK, our household has one car (which Mrs Smiffy uses as part of her job - i.e. driving between schools - so it ain't parked up for 20 hours a day like most cars) - our household contains five people. Next door one way - two people two cars - t'other side - three people three cars. We live on a terraced street - it gets busy !!

Anyway enough of that. Working in Cheadle Hulme I can see the damage that the car does to the world in general - on a daily basis. Despite two very large car parks, people will do anything to avoid paying that 50p. Maybe some do have the magical "disabled" sticker but that does not excuse bad parking. I now offer you...Thursday lunchtime @ Cheadle Hulme - in pictures.....

Oops I'll never get round there - due to the classic parking - in fact - oh sh*t - I'm stuck....

Meanwhile a Smart car pulls up in the disabled section - repeat DISABLED PARKING SECTION. Belying the name of her car, a women leaps out, slams her door and runs - yes runs off. As she slammed the door the boot popped up - she didn't notice - too busy running. As you've probably noticed, I've blanked out number plates in this post - apart from one. And just in case you cannot read it ...

Any policemen looking in - or even traffic wardens - this is the sort of crap that happens in Cheadle Hulme on a daily basis - any could meet their targets here - easy peasy !!

Anyway, about 10 minutes later, the non-disabled owner of MV05 LGU rushed back, spotted boot in the air, proceeded to just shut it (without checking its contents) jump in car and drive off. Meanwhile poor old Mr Somerfield Driver was still stuck (I'd actually been down, showed him a photo and popped it under the wiper of the car - as the minutes ticked by he eventually pinched the photo, obviously to use as evidence when he got back to the depot 45 minutes late !!).

And then - the owner turned up !!!!
I'll be fair - she was the wrong side of old - and she had a walking stick - and a fella with a limp - but that's no excuse for crass parking behind a shopping precinct that has deliveries throughout the day.

Off they shot.....

As did Mr Somerfield - and the entire contents of the south wing of Sim-Chem House went back to work !!!
The whole thing must have took over an hour - madness, absolute madness .....

Mossley Sponsored Walk 2007

We left at 0935 - we returned - 18 miles later - at 1650 - we got wet - we got dry - we got wet again - we got dry again - ad nauseam. We didn't drink much beer - but we ate a lot of bacon....from the Village Caff in Droylsden - who personally go out, catch it, kill it, cure it, slice it and then - finally cook it (such was the time it took !!) - to the Red Lion in Hyde where a simple phone call entailed 9 bacon butties waiting on our arrival (always helps if one walker's Mum is running the Pub however - thank you Mrs Dydo !). Red Lion, Manchester Road/Market Street, Hyde - cracking pint of Robinsons Bitter as well - comes recommended by my own palate - with a covered smoking area too ..

Oh yes - pictures - currently residing at ...

...much more to tell - but ....

Shrek the Third

..is well worth it. Following an abortive walk early doors, went yesterday afternoon with Mrs Smiffy - with no children. I reckon we were the only people over the age of 30 with no kids in tow (I had the smart-ass one-liner ready viz "Sh*t !!!!! we left the kids at home !!!")

Joke and siuation-wise, it was far too good for 90% of the audience yesterday (i.e. the under-10s - OK and probably some of the over-30s). Cracking soundtrack - as Captain Hook and the witches and the baddies dive-bombed Far-Far-Away ....."Joker and the Thief" by Wolfmother kicked in !! It was pointless me telling anyone...other good toons included Led Zeppelin ("Immigrant Song") and Damien Rice ("9 wotsits").

A film that comes recommended - try to go for a late showing that's not full of under-10s who are keeping up the "childhood obesity" thing thanks to the ludicrous sized popcorn boxes - and soft parenting - should do it the same way we did it - i.e. leave the buggers at home....well they are 14, 19 and 21 !!!

A New Toy ...

...arrived at "Smiffy Towers" on Friday courtesy of the fine vendors at eBay - a new lens for the camera. I wanted something betweeen the 19-35 and the 70-300 lenses - so went for a 28-105. Unfortunately the F3.5-4.5 was slightly "above budget" so plonked for t'other one (F4-5.6 - half the price !).

And then - got one on eBay for just £55 - about half the RRP - or a week's ciggie money in old currency - so it feels like a bargain to me. I had a play with it last night ..
....must clean our kitchen window on the inside ....
Mossley's answer to Parc Guell in Barcelona - our garden wall....
..a "succulent" apparently !!

Oddballs from This Week ...

...courtesy of "baby camera"..

Cheadle Hulme awaits - maybe a quality butty at lunch-time for me !!

Brother-in-law David enters the "Steve Burr Lookalike Competition" in Belper last Saturday.

Painters are in at Stalybridge Buffet Bar - so the memorabilia comes down ....

A special beer at the Buffet this week from Millstone Brewery of Mossley - RIP Eric.

A rare sight on Stockport Station - the arrival of the "ghost train" is announced....

The Full "New Mossley Manager Binge"

Wide awake now !! Could put them on photobucket - but sod it - here's the pix you won't see in the "Tameside Reporter" or the "Oldham Chronicle"...

Better than the one I put on last night !!

New Boss with "new board" - I bet they all use Daz for those "difficult stains" !!
"Posy pic" number 1 - Gerry Quinn or Bobby Robson ?
"Posy Pic" number 2 - "My first wage slip"
"Posy Pic" number 3 - "Did I really sign that ??"
All comments totally tongue in cheek of course - last night there was a real buzz at the Quiz Night - it all bodes well for the new season - comfort and confidence off the pitch can only help to inspire on the pitch !!

Sorry Guys/Gals - too bloody tired ...

For starters...new Mossley manager Gerry Quinn last night (I just HAVE to make sure I beat the pros from Reporter & Oldham Chron) - somehow ...I have more pix from tonight - but please live with it - I'm knackered .....I give you Gerry Quinn...
P.S. our quiz team came 2nd ...

Seel Park - 19th June 2007

The work parties start at 1830 - not even home most nights - managed to get up a touch later, to see the guys "just finishing" (apart from Derek Howard who they all left to carry on !!).

Some pictures ...

..and yeah - I'm probably trying to make a point ....one down two to go ....

Brief update - Fathers Day and all that ...

Saturday saw party at Belper to cover several birthdays (including daughter's 21st) - spent most of the afternoon burning meat and veggy kebabs.

Sunday - lazy day - drove home - watched Superman 2 on telly - finished off all beer in house.

Presents - oh yes - two packets of Jelly Babies (long gone) - a "Gigsworth" of CompactFlash card for the "beast" - and (listening to it now) the new Turisas album "The Varangian Way".

No beer - work beckons .....

(That was worth waiting for wasn't it ?!?!?)

It's been Lonely since last August.....

But not now - ha ha ha...well I ran out of ideas basically for the "wristy" website - but here's one that should have made it.

Download 2007 - the Review - for starters anyway..

It’s short and it’s sweet – but it comes out before Kerrang ! This is what I saw/heard/missed …

FRIDAY

Turbonegro – didn’t quite make it to see them following a slight problem with the breakfast/lunch menu (that’s the first and last time I try AfterShock – drugged by my son’s mates – dreadful !).

Dragonforce – One of my highlights – completely ruined by godawful sound. I tried all sorts of postions in relation to the stage – but it just didn’t happen – was extremely hacked off.

Wolfmother – on straight after Dragonforce – and the sound was perfect ! Excellent set as well – tight and efficient (their Manchester Apollo gig this year stood out for me and daughter as well).

Velvet Revolver – Very very good indeed – stuff from new album “Libertad” went down well. (COVER WARNING – “Psycho Killer” – Talking Heads).

Hayseed Dixie – Sorry My Chem fans, you’ll have to look elsewhere for a review (believe they
were bottled, but played through it - big up to them) – I went for a hoe-down instead and had a grand time. (COVER WARNING – Lots actually !!!)

SATURDAY

Turisas – Marvellous marvellous – worth getting up early for – the instigators of “Battle Metal” – or so they told us (COVER WARNING – “Rasputin” – Boney M).

HELLYEAH – Hell no !!

Shadows Fall – they’re on the list – but nothing stood out really.

Only heard from afar – Bowling for Soup (COVER WARNING – “I Wanna be Sedated” – Ramones).

Machine Head – sorry guys, left me completely cold – what’s with this “shouty voice” stuff ?

Slayer – Once you get used to the strange time signatures ….. and not as “shouty” as Machine Head either.

Lez Zeppelin – Very good – very faithful to the “real thing” (COVER WARNING – All of ‘em!!).

Marilyn Manson – Enjoyed it very much – once you get behind the posturing/make-up etc – you find some good heavy music.

Motley Crue – A right shambolic set - some good bits, some awful bits – guess that’s exactly what I should have expected….

Linkin Park - Caught the last couple of tracks – sounded OK.

SUNDAY

LostAlone – The local band (from Derby anyways) – destined for bigger and better things.

Papa Roach – Another pleasant surprise – good set – they still have something to offer rock’n’roll.

Devil Driver – Good musically – but oh that “shouty voice”.

Lamb of God – Good musically – but again that “shouty voice” - why ?? Best remembered - by me - for the Spitfire/Hurricane flypast during their set !

Stone Sour – Pleasantly surprised here – a very good set with better-balanced vocal than I was expecting – i.e not too much of a “shouty voice” ! (believe they covered a Slipknot song – but that’s allowed !). They had a flock of geese soaring gracefully across the top of the stage during their set.

Within Temptation – Some problems (sound ? gear ?) meant a much-reduced set (probably not even 20 minutes) – but a great 20 minutes – sat behind the desk – couldn’t see a thing – but the sound was awesome.

Dimmu Borgir – Another find for me – very black, very heavy, very good – to be looked into ….

Dream Theater – Strange brew here - mostly heavy then throwing the odd jazz piano – jury still out !

Iron Maiden – Wallowed a bit (nostalgia trip ??) but hey – did what they do best – and did it well

Top 3 Bands of the Weekend ?? Wolfmother, Velvet Revolver Turisas – there were plenty of equal fourths though !!

As with most festivals – for me anyway – Scandinavia always seems to help to save the day/weekend – over the years we’ve had Turbonegro @ Leeds, Soundtrack of our Lives @ Leeds, Hives @ Leeds. This year two of ‘em.

My problem this year (and the last few years @ Download and Leeds) is the “shouty voice” – there’s some great musicians out there, but for me, it’s ruined by this style of singing voice – the only one’s that can do it properly are the Scandinavians !! A Yank or a Limey – just not right – and I’m sure it’s not only me who thinks that this type of voice detracts from the music. Ozzy never needed it – Zippy from Dragonforce doesn’t need it (he just needs a decent sound engineer/sound system !!). It’s not nice – it’s not big – and it’s not clever. For me it’s good bands out there needing decent vocalists.

Photos to follow (remember tis only Baby Camera - I'm a law-abiding citizen !!) at:

http://s146.photobucket.com/albums/r272/mossleysmiffy/Download2007/

Really hacks me off though - I've no intention of making any money out of pix - pix for the people and all that stuff - I certainly missed the "EOS beast" over the weekend...

Download Beckons !

Hey Ho let’s go !! Off to Castle Donington after work today for a weekend of ear-bashing at Download. The butler and maid were dispatched in the Rolls this morning to erect my marquee and chill the champers (OK son and daughter went down – in our car !! – to put up the tents and organise the 24-packs – I arrive in dirty student style via train and shuttle bus !!).

For me, Friday is probably the best day, with Turbonegro, Dragonforce, Wolfmother and finishing off with Hayseed Dixie. Within Temptation and Iron Maiden (Sunday) and Motley Crue (Saturday) will not be missed either – otherwise I shall spend a while wandering round checking out some - to me anyway - new stuff (Turisas have been recommended and Dimmu Borgir sound “interesting”)

Won’t be taking the “big camera” – apparently it’s against regulations – I really need to wangle some press accreditation from somewhere. So it’s a weekend of Fuji Finepix, for better for worse.

So – nowt till Monday – take the weekend off !!

Busy Weekend 3 - Long Sunday Walk

Out of front door - turn left - to Scout Green - over to Heyheads - through to Buckton Vale/Castle Clough - onto Roman Road - over to Dove Stone Reservoir (tea/pop/ice cream stop) - across dam - through Binn Green Car Park - over to "Pots'n'Pans" monument - along the ridge - down to the "Church" at Uppermill (beer stop -whoo-hoo !) - down onto bridle path through Uppermill - arrived Greenfield - onto canal towpath - back to Mossley. Mileage - haven't a clue (couldn't be *rsed with GPS !). Got home just before the rain mind...pictures - took a few - nowt special mind so ...try to imagine the whole thing - oh go on then ..
Looking back towards Mossley on the Roman Road....
Boaty things on Dove Stone Reservoir..
Planty things outside the "Church" @ Uppermill...

Busy Weekend 2 - Andrew Booth Benefit @ Woodley Sports

I'd heard about this via the Woodley Sports Message Board - Andy Booth, a former Stockport Georgians player, had died suddenly whilst on holiday in Spain - aged 27 years old..... Offerton Green (Andy's Sunday side) were therefore trying to organise "stuff" to help out - they were hoping to set up a trust fund for his young son Jake - and one of the events was a football do at Woodley Sports last Saturday. It's football Smiffy - let's go - and contribute to a good cause as well.

A glorious day - and as I walked through the turnstiles - donating of course - I saw something that you don't often see at Lambeth Grove - namely a crowd ! I'm not being nasty here of course, but if you've been there for Unibond games when the attendance didn't "quite" reach three figures, you'll know what I mean. Huge amounts of traffic meant my trusty 330 bus from Ashton took nearer 40 minutes rather than the advertised 27 - so I turned up later than I'd hoped. I snatched a quick pint (not enough bar staff - not used to it see !) and cames outside in time for the "One Minutes Applause" by all the teams and officials involved.

After that - I just took some pictures - I have no idea which teams were involved - I was unable to keep track of the "Round Robin" results - and I've no idea which team won - especially as the "final" finished 1-1 and there was no extra time or pens (I heard a vicious rumour that the ref said "Give it to the Greens" - QED !!

Here's a couple or more of viciously reduced pictures from the day - the good (i.e. full-size) ones are residing on a CD somewhere between a chap involved with Stockport Georgians (who happens to share the same workplace as me in Cheadle Hulme) and the organisers - if they can make any money out of them - good luck to 'em.

I know what some of you might be thinking - you are WRONG ! This guy for me was one of the "Players of the Day" - great vision, calm under pressure at the back and a sweet left foot - went by the name/moniker of "Asa" - and if that refers to Asa Hartford - they're not far wrong.

See the "rubber crumb" fly up from the 3G "Field Turf" surface...

Part of possibly my best pic of the day (?) - the ball was blurred in the uncropped original mind !!

Picture taken during a "lost ball" moment - "spiritus footballus !!"

Let's hope that lots of cash was raised for Andy's family and dependents - I'm sure everyone who turned up/played/drank beer had a grand afternoon out - I did.

Busy Weekend 1 - Whit Friday

Once upon a time I found it possible to enjoy a Whit Friday from early doors until very very last doors - the thrill of the chase in the morning to find an open pub at 0830 (in the days before all-day opening) - dressing up the kids in their bestest clothes (and if they were lucky people might give them money !). Watching the Churches and some of the bands march through Mossley. Repairing back to the pub for the afternoon, before the band contests started early evening.

While this belief continues for many, for others it's just a glorified p*ss-up involving many who are incapable of holding their drink. In fact a few years ago in Mossley all the pubs closed for a three-hour "cooling off" period in the afternoon.

Now the kids are old enough, I've no real need to take the day off - so this year was, I make it the third time in the 23 years I've lived here that I went to work on Whit Friday.

Went out in the evening mind - a lovely day - so it heading towards the New Bridge Inn (the Bottom Mossley Band Contest venue), before veering off down the canal towpath towards Freizland (not too far, but "over the border" in Oldham !). The trestle-table bar contained three different Millstone Brewery offerings on handpump - can't complain ! We then wandered further up the canal before trying a quick one in the "Railway" @ Greenfield (and checking on the England score !) before going down to the Greenfield Village venue, followed by some Black Sheep Bitter in the "Clarence" and a gentle walk home.

Took some pictures - of course..

Tonight's Gig ...

...has to be up at Stalybridge Celtic's ground where the new Manager is to be unveiled by new Chairman Rob Gorski. There's been plenty of names bandied about, although the post was allegedly filled last midweek (so that should discount ex-Northwich boss Steve Burr - shouldn't it - eh - eh ??). All will be revealed later on - I hope to bring exclusive pix too !! (For what it's worth my educated guess has been Peter Davenport - but hey - what do I know about football ??)

One for the Forgers.....

They arrived on Saturday whilst I was away walking up Dent way ....

Please note that this site does not condone any forging/scamming by idle/unemployed/students/chavs in any way or form. I've gone to work - I've paid my taxes - I've earned my gig - all ticket forgers should either be summarily shot or kept in a small cell in preparation for the next war now that Donald Pleasance is sadly no more. By all means practice on gig tickets - but your time will come when the POWs need an "ausweis" or a European Health Insurance Card.
Football - yes I watched the game today - right result (in this "50% Derby" household anyway) - but the better team lost - didn't they ??

The Close Season

S'pose the thing to say here is - don't expect too much during the close season - I could write a blurb about the Morecambe v Exeter game (it's rare I can sit at home and watch football on a Sky channel - I refuse to pay daft money, and it was a welcome surprise to find the Conference play-off on the Sky Sports News Channel !!) - but I won't - suffice to say I'm dead chuffed for Morecambe.

Loads to think about over the next few months - Mossley - still no Manager; Stalybridge - still no Manager; Hyde - grumbling about admission rices hitting the magical £10; Droylsden - eagerly awaiting the Conference National; Curzon - promoted (including a local derby against Mossley); Ashton United - beating the drop and getting ready for action with new Manager Danny Johnson (and a fourth turnstile !!!!). At least Woodley appear to have a new Manager !

Summer also means time off football and time with family - trips arranged include Dowload Festival at Donnington with the two eldest kids, a long weekend in the Yorkshire Dales and a week climbing mountains in Ireland (OK Carrantoohil). Also arranged however is a three-day trip to Holland with Belper Town FC in early August. The big "Mossley handover" happens on 30th June - the day after is the annual Mossley sponsored walk around the grounds of Tameside - six grounds, several pubs !!

Watch this space - but the updates may not be as regular - you have been warned !!

Cup Final Day ....

So Chelsea won with a goal - with an only goal in the 116th minute. Bet that was painful to watch - especially if you'd paid daft money for the privilege. Still it probably wasn't much better in the pubs'n'clubs of Greater Manchester - and beyond.

Still I managed an 11 mile walk - a pint of Moorhouses "Blonde Witch" - got soaked up to my knees - and have also done some serious damage to my left hand - it's still swelling up several hours after the "incident" - have had to remove wedding ring due to a large amount of swelling on that finger - and the bruising's looking cute as well.

For my view on the Cup Final afternoon see...

Beats watching that overpaid, overhyped stuff....I think...several beers are not acting as pain-killers though !!!

Bad luck Oldham as well ...

Looking back on the week ...the end is nigh...

Following last Saturday's game at Dukinfield Town, I think it was pretty well certain that football as we know it is coming to a close this season. A tricky one - think tomorrow - think FA Cup Final - I can't remember the last time I watched one - and with it being an all-London affair (ha ha) .....

This week I've seen a couple of "first halves" in the play-off stakes - Monday's 45 mins betwixt Shrewsbury and MK Dons (?) was awful - a sad/sodden end to Gay Meadow really. I caught most of the first 45 of Derby v Southampton - although arriving at the pub after 9 mins I missed both opening goals - and then had to return home before the real action started (although I was in full txt contact with Darlo who was there at Pride Park - fingernails ?? !!!). Final twixt Derby and West Brom...

That's probably the only game left where I have any interest - because I know Dave Bax from Ashton is a "Baggie" and was there for the second leg against the Wolves (a team - where if I really went back in my life - I wanted to win).. sod it - here we go ..when I was a lad, no when I was a baby in pushchair - my Grandad Sid - who worked at St Georges (the mental hospital as it was in those days) in Stafford - used to take me to Marston Road to watch the Rangers - gave my Mum and Dad a break ..as time went on - and I grew biggerer - we'd do Stafford one weekend and Wolves the next - because they used to take a coachload from the hospital down to Molineux (putting it in the nicest possible way, it was a coachload of the "safer" patients) - we'd all go in the disabled enclosure (just adjacent to the old North Bank) - and I'd "tag along"....saw some good stuff back in the mid/late 60's....oh shut up Michael ...

Thursday saw me up at Hurst Cross for the Ashton United Quiz Night - a well-attended effort despite Mossley having a quiz night on the same night, and Curzon Ashton holding their Presentation Evening and Droylsden .....(fill in excuse - not heard one yet). The quiz was won by the Dukinfield Town team who belied their relegation position in the Manchester League to come out with an amazing 91 out of 100. The Mossley team (i.e. me !) managed an almost respectable 57 out of 100 - and DID NOT finish bottom (OK we/I were/was still in the relegation postions but ...) - a good night was had by all and over £100 was raised for the local Willow Wood Hospice - for more info (and pictures) try..

http://www.takeforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=853&mforum=aufcforum

So who's gonna win tomorrow - s'pose I should err towards the mighty Reds - but I reckon the biggest winners will be the beer sellers, the hot dog sellers and so forth - I'm looking forward to a three-dayer in Holland in August with Belper Town - I bet in total that 72 hour bash will cost me a lot less than most people will spend tomorrow in less than 15 hours.

Long live Non-League.

Dukinfield Town v Rochdale SH - Update

The weather was not too promising as I left Mossley on the 1257 train to Ashton – a valid attempt was made in Ashton to buy a cover for the monopod – failed, so sulked ove a quick pint of Phoenix “West Coast IPA” in the “Station” pub before catching a bus in the general direction of Dukinfield Town FC. My choice of bus (i.e. wrong) left me with a brisk 15 minute walk to Woodhams Park. On one of the adjacent pitches I clocked the (very) end of the first half of a game between Stalybridge Celtic Supporters and a team of Liverpool fans, before stepping “through the wall”.

I then met Jason, the Duki Town secretary – who I haven’t seen for the best part of 20 years ago !! He was then called “Oscar” and was Mossley secretary Brian Cowburn’s “right-hand man/oppo”- now he finds himself as a Club Secretary – and running the 3rd team as well ! It was a “must win” game today – and hoping that Breightmet failed to beat Royton Town.

Onto the game, and I noticed a couple of familiar faces from the Cup-winning Woodley Sports team of a couple of weeks ago, Rob Parsonage (today wearing 5) and Sam Walker (today wearing no bloodied bandage !). Also spotted were Mark Phillips (ex-Mossley – top defender) and Councillor Brian Wild, supporting his local team. Duki started the more positive team – however after about 10 minutes Rochdale got a free-kick just outside the box which pinged against the bar. This had the desired effect – straight down the other end, one-on-one with the keeper…..missed ! However it was Dukinfield who raced into a 3-0 in a heavily-extended first-half – due to a clash of Duki keeper’s head and Rochdale forward’s teeth/mouth – not pretty – and there is no photographic evidence of this one ! Hope he's OK.

On Jason’s advice I popped into the Duki Town clubhouse (which I never knew existed !) for a half-time pint. Noted they were also doing pie & peas (may have been the norm – may have been due to the Stalybridge/Liverpool supporters game mentioned earlier).

When I came out, Duki were just kicking-off…start of second half – no….3-1…no…it was bloomin’ 3-2. All the hard work of the first 45 (OK 59) minutes almost chucked in the first five minutes of the second d half !! However the return of the strange man with a camera on a big stick seemed to settle them down a bit (well you never know !!) – and I wandered round the other side of the pitch to listen to an amusing spat between linesman and several of the left-sided Rochdale team vis-à-vis the offside rule – and the lack of flagging. When the opposite linesman popped his flag into the air one player turned to “my” linesman and said “Look – he knows how to do it !!” – made me laugh anyway. Naturally the next goal – the Duki Town 4th - was tinged with a bit of offside – although in fairness I was fairly well-positioned to judge - and I’d go with the liner’s decision. 4-2 – safe ?? Not a bit of it – still time for Rochdale to grab a third and tighten a few sphincters - but 4-3 was how it finished up.

A quick pint in the club before shooting off (Manchester with Mrs Smiffy in the evening). Just time to check the score of the other game with Jason – not good news unfortunately – Breighmet had won – so Duki’s position in the Premier Division of the Manchester League in severe danger – we’ll see what the summer (and the AGMs/ground grading committee’s etc) brings …

Incidentally how many football grounds do you know, where the adjacent pub has a Sea Harrier Jump Jet in the back garden ?? It was going to be a blooming Vulcan at one stage !! I give you "The Snipe" in Dukinfield...

Dukinfield Town v Rochdale SH

Yes it's late - as usual (been in Manchester for a meal - and NOT to see Meat Loaf - I beat that particular rush back in 1977 - thanks to BBC Radio Bristol - but that's another story !)

Some pix from today for starters...

Football for Saturday

Right - all sorted for Saturday - it's a Manchester League relegation battle betwixt Dukinfield Town and Rochdale SH (that's Sacred Heart for the "dunnos"). A relegation battle only for Duki Town by the way - it's perm one from three between Dukinfield Town, Breightmet and Monton Amateurs to join AVRO for the drop - so only a win is good enough for Duki - the match will be followed by a barbie (indoors or outdoors, weather permitting), for me and Mrs Smiffy and friends - strangely enough in Rochdale - well Whitworth - near enough ..

Now here comes the kick in the teeth - yesterday I promised myself - and someone else - I'd be there for the Duki Town match - in fact I've even given it a plug on all the local message boards. What happens tonight ? A mate from outside the local area rings up with that immortal line "Fancy a freebie to the FA Trophy Final at 'New Wembley' on Saturday ?? if you can get to mine, transport will be sorted ??"

Ouch... what would you do....call me stupid - most folks do - but I had to turn down the Trophy offer - admittedly with mucho regreto. being honest, if Curzon Ashton had planted 6 past Truro City, me and half of Tameside would have been at "New Wembley" on the Sunday for the FA Vase Final - but they didn't so we won't.

And I won't be there Saturday either ..... "come on Duki !!"

Oxford United v Exeter City

It's football Jim - but not as I know it - home, then out on the 1946 train to Greenfield - cus I had this uncanny feeling that the "Railway" would have the game on - in fact when I got there the TV was off - it took a small ask off Richie - then within minutes (OK 2) twas on ....

The game - I spent much of it talking to Carl - the "pro-snapper" of the Saddleworth area (got some tips for big camera too !). In 1972 I went to the FA Trophy semi-final between Yeovil Town and Stafford Rangers - played at the old Oxford ground - got a thumping from a Yeovil fan as well - strangely enough this put me on the side of Exeter tonight - and they got there eventually - took some bloody work though - and I'm talking "before the pens".

Anyway - Morecambe and Exeter in the final - my thoughts are of course "get a non-league" team in there

Pictures - why ?? (But I've (sadly) got some though !!)

Oh go on then - happy Grecians and one seriously hacked-off Oxford fan...been there done it - think 119th minute - 1976 - Wembley - FA Trophy Final - now THAT'S seriously been there done it felt it.....

Holbrook MW v Radcliffe Olympic

Yes yes, I promise to do some words - but in the meantime here's 9,000 words - ha ha !

http://s146.photobucket.com/albums/r272/mossleysmiffy/HolbrookRadcliffe/

Left Mossley about midday - mistake - everyone seemed to be on the roads in Tameside; probably something to do with getting all the jobs done before "couch potatoing" the Manchester derby at 1245. Once we were away from Glossop and heading for Chapel-en-le-Frith, it was plain sailing. Drove straight to Holbrook, leapt out, allowing Mrs Smiffy the final couple of miles back to Belper. It was about 1350 - and they'd run out of programmes - rumour was that only about 10 were printed - and 8 of them were in the dressing rooms !! Took a "wrong turning" in the car park, walking past a quaint little hut (pictured) before ending up on the bowling green (well the surround !).

Retraced steps and found "ticket hut". It was £2-50 - I proffered a tenner and was asked if I had the right change - I had about £2-14 - this was greeted with "That'll do !". We sorted it out in the end - and yes I paid full whack !

Met Andy, his cousin and his lad - and not long after the start Tim (aka "Snapper" from Belper Town) turned up as well. I don't think the five of us actually doubled the gate - but we certainly gave it a mighty percentage increase !

To the game - I reckon 30p a goal is a pretty good return for your money. The home team (in blue) bossed the first half - playing uphill no less - and were good value for a 3-0 lead. Expecting some more in the second half I remained at the same end. OK so I nipped into the bar for a fine pint of Fullers "London Pride" on the pump - with a sparkler on (a touch rare in these parts I feel) during the break..

The expected avalanche failed to materialise - at my end anyway - instead I watched FIVE goals go in at the other ("wrong" ?) end - with each goal you could see the confidence draining out of Holbrook and surging into Radcliffe - by the end, I'm afraid Radcliffe were walking the ball in past a devastated defence and a much-bemused Danny Tollerfield (played a few for Belper Town this season) - apart from the penalty which was blasted in.

Into the club after the game to watch the Sky videprinter - with it being a 1400 kick off we got to watch most of the second half - the howls of anguish came from me when Bristol Rovers went in front at Hartlepool on 86 minutes were from me - having been at Edgeley Park only three days earlier - and having a Stockport County fan in the office. The anguish had already gone from my fellow drinkers (Derby fans y'see) 7 days or so earlier....never mind they've beaten Leeds today (12 minutes of stoppage time - in the first half ???).

Back into Belper - and into the "George" to meet Pistol and Davro who were watching the Villa v Sheff United game - Dad with Villa shirt on - non-Dad with Sheffield United shirt on. Oh dear...oh dear - so it's all down to the wire for the Blades next weekend.

Back to mother-in-laws - sat dutifully through "Grease is the Word" and "Any Old Crap will Do" whilst mother-in-law, sister-in-law and wife talked through them both (!). Sleep - home today - and this - tonight - a 40th birthday bash in Top Mossley - Happy Birthday Lynn !

A Game on Saturday...

If you look – you will find !! Down in Belper this weekend so it was a case of checking out the Central Midlands League Supreme Division for possibilities.

BINGO !! Less than three miles from Belper (i.e. a brisk walk) we find Holbrook Miners Welfare are at home to Radcliffe Olympic (need to check kick-off time though – believe it’s 1400).

Game on ..

Tonight's Big Game

Yes, I am talking about the Stockport Senior Cup Final between Woodley Sports Reserves (Woodley for the rest of the post) and Cheadle Heath Nomads (Linotype), (CHN for the rest of the post) which took place at Edgeley Park tonight.

My clock says 2355 - I need to be up at 0630 - this may be short !!

Suffice to say Woodley won 2-1 in a less than gripping game (sorry guys !). Nomads employed a ruthless offside trap for well over 90 minutes - unfortunately offside traps do not win games. At half-time (0-0) there was a mention of "pub team" directed at CHN - which turned out to be rather unfair as they took the lead when a free kick was met with a cracking header by (....sorry...). This did serve as a wake up call for Woodley who then proceeded to score two in five minutes !

Towards the end there was a little inexperience in "running the clock down" - and credir to CHN they really put the pressure on towards the end, which was unnerving the Woodley fans/officials that I was adjacent to !

End of the day - the best team won - I've always had a great deal of respect for Woodley Sports the Unibond 1 team - these guys tonight must (should) be training with the first team (I may be wrong !!) -well done to Neil Rourke (Manager) and his squad tonight.

First time I've been at Edgeley Park since 1973 (?) - when they drew with Stafford Rangers in the FA Cup 1st Round - (old age kicking in) I missed the replay at Stafford as we had a school play rehearsal that night - someone may remember the play - it could have been "Maria Marten and the Murder in the Red Barn" (I was a copper in that - Pharos Lee) - or it might have been the Joan of Arc one ("The Lark") where I played Beauchamp Earl of Warwick. Oh yes - Stafford won 1-0 - and then embarked on their best ever FA Cup run, losing to Peterborough in front of 21,000+ at Stoke's old ground - don't talk to me about Rotherham away !!!
Enough of this reminisk - remiscic - rmeniisck - looking back - here's one pic for starters (there's 158 of the b*st*rds - and that's with me "editing" on the trains home (all 3 of em) ....it's got "b*ll*x to United/Milan" written all over it - in blood as well...

trust me there's more to come.- and I will put that CD together with all the ones that pass muster for me..
The cup winners (I'm sure I could have blagged my way a touch closer - but rumour is you need a "Nikon" camera strap to do all the blagging in the sports photo area/arenas !!)
..hope mum/dad don't mind - any probs let me know ... twas the ball size vs head size that made me click !!
Yeah yeah - I'll sort the action pix as well - will tomorrow (Thursday) night do ???
